The Canterbury Alpine Ice Skating Club was formed in July 1984, by Barrie McCallum who is still involved with the club and is an International Referee. Barrie and his wife Rosemary are the Patrons for our club. It was formed initially to cover the large range of the skating public that loved the sport of Speed Skating but did not need to be competitive. The sport needed these people to survive in the competitive world of leisure time. Some of the clubs foundation members are still involved with the sport as coaches after retiring from International competitions.
Over more recent years the focus of our club has changed and is more competitive. Presently some of our skaters hold the vast majority of Open New Zealand Records for Short Track. Our skaters represent the club at local, regional, national, international competitions, this includes Junior Worlds, Senior Worlds, World Cups and the Olympic Winter Games, we are extremely proud of these skaters. We also pride ourselves with having an excellent development programme and encourage many children and adults to try short track speed skating.
We are equally proud of our novice and development skaters who never cease to amaze us with their determination, enthusiasm and commitment during training sessions and their impressive racing performances at competitions.
